Organized by
Central Library The Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University
In Association with LISSASPAC and Dr. M.G.R Janaki College for Women
Background
Library and society are inter-linked and inter-dependent. Society without libraries has no significance, and libraries without society have no origin. To serve as a vehicle of social progress, the library plays a vital role. This needs a proper legislative support. There are reasons for the enactment of legislation such as the act will constitute a proper administrative and supervisory body with executive powers; provides a well organised library system for the central, state, district and upto the remote village level; provides a study and perennial source of finance; maintains standards in library service; saves the libraries from becoming tools in the hands of bureaucrats and political high ups; and provides free library service.
Realising the importance of the library legislation for the provision and improvement of services to its clientele of various types of libraries, has compelled the governments to enact a number of legislations in India that would facilitate the smooth functioning of libraries for the rendering of services in the digital environment. At this juncture it is necessary to examine the extent of functioning of these library related legislations and to suggest possible revisions in order to make the laws to be effective in its execution and to get the desired benefits of these Acts. Keeping this in mind the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University has proposed to organize one day National Conference on “Legal and Ethical Aspects of Librarianship: Issues and Challenges”.
